Everyone who knows me knows I’m a fan of Seth Godin. The recent Travel Alberta video conference featuring Seth was just another instance of his attempts to have us ‘get it,’ and think waaaay outside the box. Give tourists exceptional experiences, or they won’t bother telling anyone about you.
Now, the author of “Groundswell” which won an award last year for best marketing book about social media, says this about one of Seth’s offerings:
Now, I’m not sure it’s that black and white, but I do think we need to keep pounding the message that Seth and others, including myself, are trying to drive home: Doing business the old way is not going to work for very much longer!
Consumers know too much, talk too much, and have too much power for you to continue treating them like cogs in your business machine. Which is not to say that you’ll be going out of business. It IS to say that if you want to create a business, or grow one to be a huge success, the new tools of social media are THE way you get there. Because that is where the power of 3 billion consumers resides, and you ignore it at your own peril. For if your service sucks, or your product under delivers, or you’re a liar, PEOPLE WILL TELL ON YOU!
Think back to the schoolyard. Back to the ‘Golden Rule.’ It’s how businesses need to act these days. Because the punishment for being a bully is no longer a trip to the principle’s office, now it’s a wicked review on TripAdvisor, or a blog outlining your misdeeds to the world, or a Facebook page with hundreds of fans who think you suck! And the punishment will be delivered at your cash register.
The good news here, of course, is that those who DO deliver, and who CAN be trusted, are going to be offered a lot of chances to succeed.
So – are you doing anything in your business that is worth people wanting to become a fan – as if you were their favorite rock band?
Or are you just a cog?
